1. Remember, Everything Counts

Environmental issues may seem to be large scale, but they are the result of decisions made by millions of people like you and I every day. You can only focus on what you can do, so remember that any of your actions will follow your decision to create an eco friendly workplace and home environment.

2. Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

Using energy efficient light bulbs can conserve energy and save you money on electric bills. Energy efficient bulbs will last many times longer than ordinary ones. Of course, it also helps to turn off the lights on when they aren’t necessary.

3. Transportation Alternatives

More energy efficient cars, including hybrids and electric cars are now available. You can reduce the amount of driving you do by carpooling, taking public transportation or, by walking or bicycling for shorter distance trips. Scooters and mopeds are another option.

Remember, it’s not “all or none.” Even if you need a large vehicle for some tasks (hauling around the family, for example), you can consider alternatives for times when you don’t need the car, van, truck or SUV.

4. Shop Local

By shopping locally, not only are you helping support your local economy, you are also reducing energy consumption. It takes a lot of fuel and ebergy to transport items across the country or even around the world!

5. Going Paperless

As much asyou can stand, that is. Excessive paper use contributes to the deforestation all around the world. You can accomplish many things online now, such as paying bills and checking account statements. You can read many newspapers and magazines online as well, most of which are free. You should request to be removed from junk mail lists, since it ends up in the recycle pile with out a sencond look anyway. Do you really need or want all that paper cluttering up your house anyway?

6. Learn to Garden and Compost

You can grow your own vegetablesin your back yard garden and learn about composting, which is a great way to recycle many food waste products. If you create an organic garden, you will also learn about non-toxic and natural ways to repel pests. This is also be a money saver if you eat what you grow!

7. Gentle Cleaning Products

Most commercial cleaning products, such as household cleaners, and laundry detergents contain harsh chemicals. These can be toxic to humans and pets, and cause environmental damage when they enter the soil and water supply. Try using organic cleaning products instead. You can also use natural, inexpensive household products like baking soda, lemon juice, and vinegar for many cleaning tasks.
