Most environmental problems today are the result of the actions taken by billions of people around the world. If enough people make the effort to “go green” the results could be massive. Here are some simple strategies to remember.

1. Walk More, Drive Less

This is good in three ways – it helps the environment, it’s good for your health, and it saves you gas money! Sometimes driving cannot be prevented, but try to reduce the number of trips to the grocery store or the mall, carpool when possible and walk or ride a bicycle whenever you can.

2. Green Cleaning

Join the “clean green” movement by purchasing natural or organic cleaning products, or by using inexpensive household products like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. These products are less toxic for your family, home, and pets. They are also friendlier to the environment than products that use harsh chemicals that end up in our ground soil, air, and water supplies.

3. Your Pets Can Be Green Too

You can enroll your furry friends to help the environment as well. Natural and organic shampoos, pet foods, flea and tick repellents and other pet supplies are now easily found.

4. Keep Home Temperatures Comfortable but Moderate

Many people keep their homes and places of work cold in the summer and hot in the winter. If you are walking around in a t-shirt indoors when it’s cold outside, or you need long sleeves when it’s hot out because the air conditioning is on full blast, then you can probably do more to conserve on energy costs.

5. Shop Local Markets

Food and other consumables that haveto be shipped long distances use up a lot more energy than those produced in your own community. Look for farmer’s markets for your produce and local stores for your other shopping needs.

6. Establish A Simple Recycling System

Make it easy for you and your household to recycle. Have a system everyone understands and share responsibilities to keep it organized. Use clearly marked bins, boxes or bags for each kind of recycled item like newspapers, glass, plastics, and metal.

7. Go Paperless

You can cut down on your paper use by paying bills and conducting transactions online. Try to cut down on the number of junk mail lists you are on, although this can be a challenge.

8. Inspect Your Home’s Insulation

If your home is properly insulated, you can cut down on heating costs, which saves energy for everyone. If you are really motivated, you can look into alternative energy options like solar or geothermal which can reduce energy usage even more.

9. Consume Less Meat

Not everyone wants to be a vegetarian, but by cutting back on your meat consumption you are helping the environment. Factory farms are a major source of energy consumption, and pollution, and it’s very expensive to raise all those animals and feed them. If you do eat meat, consider utilizing local farms that use natural or organic methods of production.

10. Look For New Ways to Recycle

Recycling just means to reuse something. Many things people buy new could be bought cheaper used with little sacrifice. This includes furniture, cars, toys, clothing, and electronic gadgets. In the same manner, when you are finished with something, pass it on to others, rather than sending them to the dump.

These simple strategies can help ignite your imagination to find your own ways to help the environment.
